The Fomorians

There are many oblique references to the presence of Black people in ancient Ireland. Ancient Irish mythology refers to the original inhabitants of the island as being a giant, sea-faring people called the Fomorians (Fomors), which means “dark of the sea”. According to the ancient lore, they were a cushitic people from the African continent. Often depicted as demons, they defeated the first few incoming waves of invaders, but could not defeat the Firbolgs, who settled the land and lived side-by-side with the native Fomors.

Those myths may have a factual historical basis. It is proposed that the Formorians were a real people who were in all likelihood sailors from the African continent.

Two more invasions, the first led by the godly Tuatha de Danaan, and the second by the Celtic Milesians, took control of Ireland, mixing together with the Fomorians until they were no more.

There are credible sources for the African association with Ireland. The most likely of these is that they were Phoenicians and/or Egyptians. The Phoenicians were Canaanites, which came from the line of Ham. Ham is the mythological ancestor of the Black nation.

The Phoenicians were also well-known for their sailing skills, and are said to have traveled to the British Isles, which they called the “Tin Islands”. Perhaps, before Ireland was a Celtic domain, which it wasn’t until a few centuries BCE, the Phoenicians colonized it. It is noteworthy that the name Fomorians sounds a bit like Phoenicians.

There is also a legend that an Egyptian princess, Scota, left Egypt with some followers and journeyed to Ireland. Legend has it that Egyptians left many ancient tin mines all over Britain but especially Ireland which was their major source of the valuable metal.

Another idea is that they were Taureg Berbers. The Berber language is Hamitic, and the Berber people live in an area from which travel to Ireland would be easily accessible. The Berbers perhaps set sail from western Morocco, and settled on Ireland before the Celts, making it their new home.

Moorish Science Temple founder Drew Ali teaches that Ireland was once part of a Moorish empire, and that the Irish are a Moorish people. Perhaps there is a common root between the “moor” sound in Fomor and the word Moor?

Selkies and Half-Breeds

Another Irish legend tells of the Selkies, a sort-of “wereseal” that is a seal during day, but a human by nightfall. Sometimes, in an Irish family of fair-skinned, light-haired people, a child is born with dark hair eyes, and skin, and is called a Selkie.

The concept of the Selkies appears to make subliminal reference to the half-breed children that resulted from the extensive miscegenation that occurred between the Celts and the dark skinned original inhabitants that they had met upon their arrival in Ireland.

Many people of Irish descent have distant and recent African roots, and these features can still be seen in the people and in the culture. There are some Irish people with Afros (just like Andre the Giant a late continental European wrestler with afro-hair). In Southern Ireland, some people, referred to as “Black Irish”, are noted for their strikingly dark features, as opposed to the fair-skinned, light-haired north.

Although many Irish descendants are particularly pale, they do have pronounced Africoid facial features, as well as dark brown eyes, and dark brown hair that is sort-of kinky, especially in moist conditions. A sub race of the Irish called the Bronn are noticeably Mediterranean (read: African) in features especially their hair.

In addition to all of this, Celtic music is distinctly different from the rest of Europe, and easily comparable to African music.

Black, Viking and Irish

Unlike Scotland and England, Ireland was never colonized by the Romans. As a result, Ireland remained relatively isolated.

The Vikings established port cities like Dublin. The Viking texts left stories and descriptions of African soldiers captured in Ireland whom they called blaumen[blue-men].

Most Viking references to ”black” in Norse would have signified having black hair as opposed to skin color but blaumen meant black skinned. Most of these blaumen were captured soliders from Moorish Spain. It was observed that:

“A prominent Viking of the eleventh century was Thorhall, who was aboard the ship that carried the early Vikings to the shores of North America. Thorhall was “the huntsman in summer, and in winter the steward of Eric the Red. He was, it is said, a large man, and strong, black, and like a giant, silent, and foul-mouthed in his speech, and always egged on Eric to the worst; he was a bad Christian.””

“Another Viking, more notable than Thorhall, was Earl Thorfinn, “the most distinguished of all the earls in the Islands.” Thorfinn ruled over nine earldoms in Scotland and Ireland, and died at the age of seventy-five. His widow married the king of Scotland. Thorfinn was described as “one of the largest men in point of stature, and ugly, sharp featured, and somewhat tawny, and the most martial looking man… It has been related that he was the foremost of all his men.””

What about Scotland and Wales?

“Any comprehensive account of the African presence in early Europe should include England, Ireland, Scotland, Wales and Scandinavia. The history and legends of Scotland confirm the existence of “purely Black people.” We see one of them in the person of Kenneth the Niger. During the tenth century Kenneth the Niger ruled over three provinces in the Scottish Highlands.

The historical and literary traditions of Wales reflect similar beliefs. According to Gwyn Jones (perhaps the world’s leading authority on the subject), to the Welsh chroniclers, “The Danes coming in by way of England and the Norwegians by way of Ireland were pretty well all black: Black Gentiles, Black Norsemen, Black Host.””

  1. not neccescerily……..

If you look at the “History of Ireland” by Geoffrey Keating, published in 1902 by the Irish Texts Society,
on page 179 is the following sentence. Translated from Irish, it says” Neimheadh won three battles on the Fomorians, namely, navigators of the race of Cham, who fared from Africa.” On page 183 it also says that “they used to be called Fomorians namely, from their being committing robbery on sea.”
So while the Fomorians don’t seem to have been very nice people, and most of them were wiped off the map of Ireland by the Celts, among others a few might have survived. If you are curious, look at Frenchpark,
    Roscommon, for some answers

  2. This, while amusing, is the largest load of bunk in a long time. That man and civilization originated in Africa is almost unquestioned. That genetically we can trace ourselves to about for women (via mitochondrial DNA) is argued, but well down the road to accepted as fact. None of that means much since the former issues represent human development around 200,000 years ago. Consider the advent of science… A wonderful three letter concept: DNA. There is NO known/identified connection between Ireland/England/Scotland and Africa.

Weren’t the Fororians from Scandinavia? I thought the Black danes referred to Amor… I guess we all try to make ourselvs fel better by showing superiority over others…

It was amusing to read new fairy tales

  3. I agree that it is funny, because I am the whitest African you have ever seen. but…….
many fairy tales come from real life. The word Fomoran means dark from the sea.
If you look up the haplogroup R1b3, you will see that it can be found in populations in the west of Ireland and in parts of Africa.
I agree it seems unlikely, but unlikely does not mean impossible.

  4. hmm……. As I was erased I will try again.

DNA is a wonderful thing and my DNA is R31b,
which is uncommon in Europe, but common in Ireland. It can also be found in Camaroon.

Ireland has been inhabited for 10,000 years
and it is entirely possible that the first to explore a newly unfrozen land were from a warmer climate, namely Africa. Both the Romans and the Vikings have written about ‘Large black men living in the west.” The ones who had darker color would not have survived in a cold climate, so the preference for survival would have been for lighter skin, and after a few thousand years, genetic changes would have occurred.

  5. the moors invaded italy specifically that island that was red heads and blonds plus blue eyes no more , sicilians ?heard o them? thank the moors. the dadgum irish are are still pale. black irish were tea totallers non drinkin micks ps i aint seen a red headed IIItalin since i was a kid her ma was a kraut

  6. A 1000 years ago, when London & Paris werre dusty villages, Baghdad was enjoying a golden era. The Moors (the Arabs) invaded Spain and remained in Spain for over 700 years. The rest is history. The Spanish became powerful and their Armada in Ireland is a living proof that the black Irish are Arabs.

  7. The Irish Claim in their miths that they are from Iberia (Melesian).
They are almost identical genetically to the Basque. Neither group has much in common with present day “Africans”. Both groups have remained very genetically homogenious over time, indicating that they have not been drowned out by other groups. This article does give Afrocentrics ever decreasing credibility. Just as those who tried to state that the first American presedent was black – total B.S. But if you incist that every accomplishment and every places was first occupied by Africans of exactly the same type that exist in Sub-Saharan Africa today, then perhaps you won’t mind taking credit for the only successful case of genocide in the history of man – extinction of the Neanderthals.
Irish have no Black human ancestry directly. Is Art Garfunckel Black because of his “fro”? No. I am not sure that our common ancestors started out with kinky hair. You do not see that in any other primate. It may have been a gene that appeared after the split between African and Caucasian/ Asian races. As someone stated earlier, skin color is not a good predictor of race. This is an adaptation to enviornment. The farther away from the equator one gets, the less sunlight he gets. The less sunlight absorbed the less active Vit D is created. More melanin in the skin blocks more sunlight. Northern peoples need lighter shin, so they can absorb enough sunlight to creat adequate Vit D. On side effect of to little Vit D is a decrease in fertility.
There are many interesting studies on the differences between races. On pointts out measurements that cannot be argued with: Mongoloid brain/body size is greater than Caucasian is greater than Negroid. Negroid testosterone levels are greater than caucasian are greater than Mongoloid. Negroid penis size is greater than Caucasin is greater than Mongoloid. Now we know that Afrocentric men are very proud to say that their shafts are the biggest. But those same people will howl and cry racism at the thought that their brains are smaller. When in fact as women would agree, men thing with their penis anyway. My point is that science is developing ways to so interconnections, ancestry, and differences. We cannot count on mythology. Who know, a few thousand yeard from now, the legend of Tarzan may be cited as proof that one Caucasian baby crashed in Africa, learned to communicate with all the animals, and dominated a whole negroid population – what a croc.
I am just asking the Afrocentric activists to be reasonable and produce good research. Of course, Having been in research, I am awar that the authors always have their own (unscientific) agenda, and come to very questionable conclusions from the data they have.
I read a very intersting article by a black man, and he stated the problem with the black community is that they depend on a group identity. They are not allowed to be individuals. Well I am happy to say that my best friend id Puertorician – he has individual identity and is actually proud of the American culter as it has evolved from European Ancestry. I have a very good friend that Is Black. SOmetime he starts to cry poor opressed black man, but when I call him on the reality of things, he thinks about it and agrees. He is even writing a thesis on the fact that in America, there is only one group of people with no help from the government when they need it , caucasian males. I only pointed my friends out, so you won’t embarrass yourself by ranting about me being a racist. I am only interested incalling things the way they are. If there was proof that Irish were black, I would have no problem with it – it just is not so. Sorry I rambled so long, I guess I have too much spare time – no the reallity is that this is more interesting than TV.

    1. Who did you get your truth from and how is it validated
Is your truth validated by the very same people the told you
Can an incentives be derived for having this truth
How much power and influence does the creators of your truth have
Have those creators ever been accused of manipulating truth before

The size of a person brain will sometimes have something to do with the size of that persons head

in science theories are developed by the questions ask by an observer and any answer or solution generated is an out growth of the psychology of the individual this does not mean is the truth this is finding what that individual wanted to see

I think that goes for both side
But reverting to stereotypes is a mark of some level of ignorance
      Like you said proof
Not much out there just clever argument
      On both sides
But I KNOW something absolute that would make you shycha self
