Blind Indian Hemp Dealer Arrested

Bauchi State command of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has arrested a blind man, Yakubu Makaho Mohammed (65), for illegal possession of Indian hemp, weighing 400 gramme and valued at N17,600.
Parading the suspect before newsmen at the command’s headquarters, on Thursday, the NDLEA state commander, Sule Momodu, said the suspect, who was arrested at Gubi village, had been in the illegal business for long.
Momodu also said that the suspect was once convicted of drug- related offences two years ago, adding that for a blind man like Yakubu to be involved in illicit drugs trade, showed that the drug- suppliers were desperate and could use anyone.
The NDLEA boss solicited the support of members of the public to help rid the state of the menace of illicit substances and said that the drug war in the state had yielded positive results.
In an interview with newsmen, the suspect said he started the drug business during the late General Sani Abacha’s regime, adding that a soldier whom he used to supply meat at the Nigeria Armour School on Ningi road introduced him to the business.
Mohammed, who said he lost his sight in 1998 due to a strange illness, said he opted for the business of selling Indian hemp “to keep body and soul together.”
