Was Septimius Severus the 1st Black man to rule England?
Did you know that Black and Asian people first came to the North East in Roman times? Or that England was once ruled by a Libyan? These and many more historical facts were revealed as part of BBC Black History Month.
Early Black History
Emperor Septimius Severus wasn’t the only Black Roman in Britain. There were other African officers, soldiers … stationed on and around Hadrian’s Wall in the 3rd century.
From the 9th century onwards, there are records of Vikings bringing Moroccans to the region.
There’s a gap in the recording of black presence in the North East of England for nearly 400 years until the start of the 16th century.
Black and Asian presence in the North East of England can be traced back to Septimius Severus, a North African Libyan, who ruled England as Roman Emperor between 193-211 AD.
Severus was unique amongst the Roman emperors as being the first Black citizen to hold the highest office in the empire.
The most celebrated example of an early Black presence in Britain is the case of the Roman military garrison on Hadrian’s Wall in Cumbria.
A 4th century inscription tells us that the Roman auxiliary unit, Numerus Maurorum Aurelianorum, was stationed at Aballava, modern day Burgh-by-Sands.
This unit had been mustered in the Roman province of Mauretania in North Africa, modern Morocco.
Genetic evidence
It was recently suggested that African DNA might be found to be present in the local populations near to Hadrian’s Wall.
However, this would not conclusively show that the Black Roman soldiers on the wall intermarried with the local population because of the problem of ‘admixture’.
Admixture is a process whereby the DNA of a population becomes diluted over time and it cannot be shown at what period in time that dilution took place.
African Legacy
During his time in office, Septimius Severus legalised marriage during military service.
There is also evidence that that some Black Romans married, had children, and remained in Britain after their tour of duty.
Skeletons unearthed in a Romano British Cemetery outside York revealed the limb proportions of some of the men suggested that they were Black Africans.
Perhaps they might be considered to be Britain’s first Diaspora people, making Cumbria the birthplace of Black British history?

They are the illegetimate offspring of Lucifer. If anyone needs a proof of that, just take a look at all the man-made slaughters in recorded history. You will realize they were carried out by Caucasians. World war 1 and 2, the aborigines in the us, in australia, the slave trade, the crusades, the current world crisis, the list goes on and on. I’ve got news for you all. Septimius Severus wasn’t black; he was North African. At most, he looked Arabic and Mediterranean. I’m not saying this as part of some anti-black agenda. My only agenda is against the misrepresentation of information used here in order to claim that one of the Rome’s emperors was black. To do so – seemingly to drum up publicity for, and add weight to, black history month – is extremely bad practice.

They are a result of intermixing between the indigenous African population and white people. In the times of Septimus Severus,; less than 1% would have been mixed like Current North Africans are. You conveniently forget ir maybe you are not aware of the fact that white people are not indegenous to Europe. They arrived there quite late actually. By then Europe already had kingdoms and cities and castles. I suggest you study the writings from Egypt and you will discover when they arrived in Europe and in what state they were when they arrived.
What are you saying? North America was always a white society. As far as history, North Africa was predominantly Black until Vandals, Barbary Slave trade, as well as the arrival of the Islams from Minor Asia around 800 A.D. Your logics makes no sense to me. It’s like saying that North America was occupied by White people 2000 years ago. Mass migration including other factors can change the face of a region.

OMG! I was just talking to someone about the subject of the “lost” blacks in history. As someone who’s already been reading up on Black Africans and their significant role in European History, this news does not surprise me, there is tons of info out there available to willing minds that will speak the truth about the history of this world and a great number of them are white so this isn’t a BLACK thing, it’s a truth thing and restoring dignity to a people that have been through so much throughout history. Pretty much Africans influenced MOST to ALL of Roman, Grecian, and other cultures with the help of Asiatic influences as well. Unfortunately alot of our history and significant black historical figures have been stolen and put to “white face”. Notice how even if the historical figure was born raised and decendent of Africans he or she is still portrayed as white, (Cleopatra, Hannibal etc.) in everything from our television shows to wikepedia. The only cure for this is to READ READ and READ some more. Dont rely on someone telling you something or an image you see on televeision. Even Alot of Greek historians acknowledged our presence and contribution. It grinds my gears to see White people playing Egyptians or North Africans, even with the walls of the great pyramids heavily decorated with BROWN and BLACK faces and bodies (lighskin, darkskin) egyptians are still primarily played by white people in our cinema. Its the equivilent of someone 1000 years from now saying Africa was A white continent because places like South Africa have a heavy white population NOW..
